Beginning to think that maybe I should begin a campaign around this. Need a slogan though. "Information has value - don't destroy it", or "Information is not just for Christmas, it's forever", or "Information is our heritage - don't destroy it!" Any other offers?

I couldn't agree with you more, Steve. DPA is a huge shield for lazy practitioners - and people hide behind both the truth and the myth of data protection.

There's much of what you say that resonates with me.... I too have spent much of my career as an Information Management specialist, and more recently as a KM consultant. In my last job I was responsible for both. I regularly spend much time with clients explaining the value of good IM practices as a foundation for KM and the limitations of EDRM and DMS as a KM solution....

On a lighter note, and as a contribution to your medieval scribes analogy, I recommend the following short video of a Medieval Helpdesk scene http://tinyurl.com/2pua2j

I think there is a growing and insidious tendency to hide behind the Data Protection laws, which absolves records managers and other information professionals from the need to think. Fine if this is for the deletion of personal and private data as part of a user's contract (e.g. ts & cs) with a supplier. Not fine if this is being used to delete data that someone at the supplier end has arbitrarily marked as 'private' which then invokes the 'use by' criterion. There is much mis-labeling of data/information in the public sector, with records marked as 'private' 'secret' or 'confidential' that are nothing of the sort, and particularly where significant time has elapsed since the original marking. Correctly marked non-private, non-confidential data that doesn't infringe Data Protection, Copyright or any other laws should be published and preserved.

Data protection laws require the destruction of some records after a certain "use-by" date.
